The listed classifieds are an exact representation of our Reader Ads as they are in the printed edition of The Merchandiser, distributed weekly on Thursdays by the U.S. Postal Service in Ontario and Wayne County, New York.
Basic Classified User Interface Controls On page load you’ll notice you have many options available for displaying all of the classified content or just a specific type. On initial page load all of the currently listed classifieds/reader ads are loaded into the interface. You can easily adjust what is being displayed with the use of the Quick Sort at the bottom of the interface where there are several icons to select a general category. For example: Sales (garage sales, yard sales, sales of all type), Meetings (church, group, town, meetings of all types), Automobile (for sale, wanted, new, used, etc.) For Sale (realty, homes and property for sale), For Rent (homes, apartments, rooms available for rent) Favorites (favorites is for use with registered members of Community at The Merchandiser – see full use and or member registration options below for more details)
At the top of the interface you also have a drop down menu on the right side as an additional sorting option to filter thru the classifieds/reader ad content (on page load it will display “All” in the drop down). Simply select the dropdown to display a list of available categories to choose from. Many of these options are the same as what is available in the “Quick Sort Icons” area. The cool thing here aside from additional categories to choose from in the drop down menu is you can select “Multiple Categories” to display in the classifieds interface by holding down the "ctrl" or "cmd" key on your keyboard while you select each of the categories you wish to view.
Using Keyword Search At the top of the classifieds interface there is a search field you can use to search the content currently being displayed in the interface. Simply type a word or combination of words into the field and hit the "Find" button. If the search produces any results the interface will scroll to the first result it finds and highlight the word or words in each classified that matches your search results in yellow, red is used to show you the first result in found going down the list of classifieds. You can now scroll and use the highlighted results to point what you are looking for more easily or you can use the “Next and Back Arrow" Buttons to go between each result automatically.
To start a new search simply type a new word(s) in the search field and hit "Find". To clear your search results just delete your word(s) from the search field and hit “Find” button again or type a new search word or phrase.
NOTE: Keyword Search only searches categories you have chosen and is the content that is in view. To search all classified/reader ad content make sure you select the "All" button in the Quick Sort or select "All" from the drop-down menu at the top right of the interface.
Accessing Additional Information: Maps, Comment/Review, Routes, Social Shares, Favorites, Etc. Just use your mouse and select by “clicking or selecting” any individual classified/reader ad and the “Details Display” section will appear/expand to the right side of the classifieds interface. The information displayed in the "Details" display view will vary depending on the type of classified you have selected.
Using Our Custom Google Maps Interface: If the content type has an associated location or address like with garage sales, committee or group meeting locations. A Google Map will appear and populate an icon showing the location. The address and the option to get directions will be included. If no map or location is available for display other unrelated information will appear in the mapping area. You can use all of the features available within the map are 3D street view, zoom in and out and panning to see what is in the area surrounding your destination
Using Get Directions: If you would like to get directions to the location being displayed (based on the classified/reader ad you selected) just click the link and you will be directed to a page that will give you turn by turn directions for view or print based on the start location you input. If you are on a “Mobile Device/Smart Phone” depending on how your device is configured you may be asked to use your devices “Maps Application” and or “Navigation” which will allow you to navigate from your current location or set your own start point and use turn by turn navigation. This also allows you to save the route for later or store it to use it again and again, in the case of a weekly or monthly event or to share a sale later with a friend, etc.
Using Social Share Links: Based on the classified/reader ad information being viewed you can select one of the available social network share icons to automatically generate a link that is added to your social network profile. If you currently aren't logged into your social network (examples being: FaceBook, Twitter, Google+) you will be redirected to do so, so the share can be added for you. Use them to share your favorites, or if it is your classified/reader ad use it to get more exposure to your ad by sharing it on your social network!
The Social Share Link that is created will direct anyone who selects it from your social network page/site of choice and be redirected directly to the classified you shared on our classified page taking the user right to the classified in question in an animated process. (Note: you can also copy the url path out of the share and post it anywhere you would like on any page, your website or another, email etc. and it will do the same)
Using - Creating Favorites: You must be a registered member of “Community at The Merchandiser“ and logged in to use this feature. Members have the added benefit to use and save favorites by selecting the “Star Icon” under the mapping area to mark any classified/reader ad they would like to use with the “Favorites - Quick Sort Feature”.
Favorites in the “Quick Sort Icons Area” which is part of the “Basic Interface Controls Section” listed at the beginning of this information section. Will display all the classifieds/reader ads you have chosen as a favorite. This means when you select the Quick Sort “Star Icon” all your favorites the ones “you chose” will be the only content to display inside the classifieds interface. To remove a classified/reader ad from your favorites simply select the same star you used to add it while you have the ad selected
Comments and Reviews Under the mapping area are a couple of addition tab groups. The first being Comments/Reviews. Registered members of The Community at The Merchandiser website can make comments or add a review on any classified/reader ad listed. These comments and reviews are visible to the public, if anyone has left a comment it will be visible inside the comments/reviews tab.
To open the comments/reviews tab group just click on the heading (it will highlight yellow as you roll over it). Once you have the tab group open, you can add a comment by selecting the “add new comment” button and an input field for you to type in will load into the comments/reviews tab group. Type your comment and hit the “Save Me” button to add your comment or review and it will be saved to the classified you are currently viewing.
Routes Still under development, but full functioning is the newest addition to our classifieds interface. Routes allows you to create a route with multiple destinations based on classifieds you select in the interface. The Routes tab group is located below the mapping area under the comments/reviews tab group.
Creating a Route: Start by selecting a sale or classified with a location you want in your route. Any classified that has an address that populates in the mapping area will work. Next you can adjust the “Start Point” and “End Point” options in the “Routes Tab Group” and hit the “Update Route” button.
Alternatively you can always just select the “CREATE ROUTE” button on the top menu of the classified interface next to the “Key Word Search” options and edit your start and end points later.
Adding and Removing Stops/Locations: Once you have selected a method to start creating your route the “Add To Route – Checkbox” field gets added to every classified/reader ad that can be mapped in the main classified interface. Use your mouse and click the check box to add any available sale, meeting, event location, etc. you would like added to your route! Un-checking will remove it from your route. The mapping area display will add markers to the map and plot your course in real time as you check and un-check stops for your route. At the same time in the Routes tab group your directions will update.
Note: You can still jump between sort filters changing the content displayed in the interface while creating a route. Any classified/reader ad that can be added to your route will have the “Add To Route” check box field for your use.
Adjusting Start and End Points: By default the “Start Point” is set to our address at The Merchandiser in Clifton Springs and the “End Point” is set to the Start Point. You can edit the Start and End points whenever you wish. To edit the start point, simply type your address or the address you wish to start from into the fields replacing the default address. Currently the end point only supports using the start point address as the end or the last selected classified you have chosen as your final stop.
Once you've made any adjustments in the start and end points remember to hit the “Update Route” button again so your map view and directions list updates.
Using Turn by Turn: Once you have a route started at any point you can access the “Turn by Turn” driving directions that is part of the Routes tab group. Just select the “Turn by Turn” button located at the bottom of the Routes tab group and in between each location you in your route will appear turn by turn direction. See print below for printing these directions
Using Map to Google: Alternatively to our Turn by Turn you can use the “Map to Google” button located next to Turn by Turn at the bottom of the Routes tab group. This will open your route in a full size Google maps display and give you additional route and map options like save your route to “my maps” that you can share with other devices like a smart device or save it for later, etc.
Printing Your Directions: To print clean “Turn by Turn” directions of your route and not the entire page use the “Print” button located at the bottom of the Routes tab group next to the “Turn by Turn” and “Map to Google” buttons. This will open a new browser window with larger print and clear directions. If you experience any problems your browser may be blocking the pop-up window!
Clearing Your Route: To clear your route or to start a new route, use the “CLEAR ROUTE” button at the top menu if the classified interface. This will clear the check boxes and remove the check fields as well as close out the mapping area. The “CLEAR ROUTE” button appears in place of the “CREATE ROUTE” button when you initially create a route.
Alternatively you can just refresh your browsers display as well to clear the route and reset the interface.
Mobile Device Users: Please note, depending on how your device is configured you may be able to access your devices maps and navigation. Most stock navigation applications do not currently support "waypoints, or stops" (they only support start and end points) your may or may not. We are currently developing a method to easily utilize your devices mapping and navigation systems to better provide automated turn by turn navigation, but until Google Navigation and similar applications support waypoints like Google Maps does natively it could be a while before it’s fully integrated into the classifieds interface. As things progress and more options become available for mobile use we will include there uses here.
